    overview.

    House of Chords was evaluating two redesigned versions of its e-commerce website. I conducted a comparative usability study to determine which experience better supported product discovery and checkout while meeting users’ expectations for clarity, satisfaction, and visual appeal.

    business & research challenge.

    The central challenge was deciding which website direction could best support both customer needs and business growth. The evaluation examined whether either version improved task efficiency, task success, user satisfaction, and perceived usability across the purchasing journey.

    research process.

    I conducted a between-subject usability study at HEC Montréal with 12 participants. Each participant tested one website version by completing two realistic tasks: finding an electric guitar and adding it to the cart, then completing checkout with a provided payment method. I analyzed task time, completion success, satisfaction scores, WebQual measures, and qualitative feedback using SAS.

    key findings.

    Version B enabled significantly faster task completion and achieved higher user-satisfaction scores. Participants considered it clearer, easier to navigate, and better aligned with their expectations. Although Version B also produced higher task-success rates, the difference was not statistically significant. Version A performed better in visual appeal, creativity, and emotional engagement.

    recommendations.

    I recommended combining Version B’s clarity and efficiency with Version A’s stronger visual identity.

    Additional recommendations are as follows: simplifying complex wording, improving Version A’s checkout flow, strengthening visual consistency in Version B, adding clearer interaction feedback, and providing better instructional guidance throughout both experiences.

    outcome & reflections.

    The evaluation provided House of Chords with a clear, evidence-based direction for improving its e-commerce experience. It demonstrated that usability, brand expression, and emotional engagement can be strengthened together when design decisions are grounded in reliable research.

    This project advanced my expertise in designing rigorous usability studies and integrating quantitative performance data with qualitative user insights. By analyzing task completion times, success rates, satisfaction scores, WebQual measures, and participant feedback, I developed a comprehensive understanding of how users interact with and perceive digital experiences. The project further strengthened my ability to interpret complex evidence, identify meaningful patterns, and translate research findings into strategic, actionable recommendations that support both user needs and business objectives.
